Reflexology is one of our favourite treatments to do in the salon, and it has LOADS of benefits for couples struggling to conceive.
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?
There are thousands of nerve endings in the soles of the feet, and when stimulated, they send messages to the corresponding parts of the body to return to homoeostasis (i,e. to work as they should). Stimulating areas on the feet may feel slightly uncomfortable (some people just don’t like their feet being touched!), while others may find it to be a stimulating and energetic experience.
Everyone is completely different – we’ve had clients experience sensations of heat or coldness, laughter, short-lived sadness, or yawning. Your response to reflexology is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about – it’s all part of the healing process.
As Reflexologists, we are very sensitive to this energy release, and will notice any physical symptoms you experience by us working on certain areas of your feet.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR REGULATING MENSTRUAL CYCLES
Irregular or missing periods can easily be regulated through Reflexology. By stimulating hormonal points such as the pituitary gland, hormones will be balanced and menstrual cycles regulated. Reflexology is also wonderful for creating a better blood flow, easing menstrual cramps and helping with symptoms of PMT & PMS.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR STIMULATING OVULATION
Reflexology is extremely effective at stimulating ovulation through working on the reproductive points of your feet. If you are unsure of your cycle, it’s beneficial to keep track either in a diary or using a tracker app on your phone. Through experience, I find the best time for Reflexology is the week prior to ovulation.
REFLEXOLOGY FOR STRESS
There are many stressors in our everyday lives – from family concerns to work pressures. Couples struggling to conceive will experience significant levels of stress, which increases the release of adrenaline, cortisol, and nor-epinephrine in your body, which puts it in a constant “fight or flight” mode.
Reflexology not only helps to re-balance these hormones, but also gives you a sense of relaxation almost instantly due to the release of oxytocin. A relaxed, balanced home for an embryo to grow is the optimum state our bodies should be in.
REFLEXOLOGY GIVES YOU A SENSE OF CONTROL
As much as we dream of falling pregnant quickly and easily, it doesn’t always work out this way. Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or through assisted methods, the sense of guilt, jealousy of others, and disappointment can be all-consuming, and it seems out of your control. From experience, I have found by allowing women to gain some of their control back gives a tremendous mental boost, which in turn, mirrors in their bodies.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU HAVE REFLEXOLOGY FOR FERTILITY?
I often get asked how often should you have Reflexology for fertility, and the answer is – if there is a lot of imbalance within the body, then it is beneficial to have a block of appointments quite close to each other to really get things going. After that it is maintenance. If you are able to, weekly Fertility Reflexology appointments are extremely beneficial, but one appointment a month will relax you deeply also.
HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT
If you are receiving Reflexology for fertility reasons, there are many ways you can complement your treatments between appointments. I am a huge advocate of using positive affirmations, and suggest clients write and repeat them daily. Using guided meditations is hugely beneficial to both the body and the mind, as is a gentle daily yoga practice. Self-care is such an important piece of the jigsaw, so remember to book in candlelit baths, evenings out with friends who make you laugh, and plenty of fresh air.
